A New York study once again revisits the issue of stent-happy cardiologists implanting the tiny metal devices that help prop open - or revascularize - blocked coronary arteries. Essentially, this study suggests that two-thirds of the justifications for this type of cardiac intervention in non-emergency patients were either "inappropriate" or "uncertain".

Current diagnostic protocols for identifying heart attack include taking at least two blood samples to test for cardiac enzymes during the first 12 hours after the onset of symptoms. But like many women, I was sent home within five hours of the onset of those textbook symptoms - so was I misdiagnosed after my cardiac tests turned out to be "normal" because I had simply been sent home too soon? Here's more about those telltale cardiac enzymes that doctors look for.

When I was at Mayo Clinic, cardiologists there referred to coronary microvascular disease as a "trash basket diagnosis" - not because the condition doesn't exist, but because this debilitating disorder of the tiniest blood vessels in the heart is so often missed entirely. A correct diagnosis usually happens only when all other possible cardiac diagnoses are thrown out.

Sadly, only one in five patients actually gets to the hospital within one hour of the onset of heart attack symptoms. In fact, the average delay, even while suffering serious cardiac symptoms, is four hours. This delay means that even people who survive a heart attack can be left with large portions of the heart unnecessarily and permanently scarred by the heart attack. And one of the reasons for what doctors call "treatment-seeking delay" is plain old embarrassment.

A 2008 Canadian study of women over 40 reported that women spend more time thinking about their weight than they do about their hearts. For example, only 10% of women surveyed knew their personal LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol levels, versus the 64% of women who know how much they weighed in high school! Here are some useful tips for staying on top of your next doctor's visit.

Coronary angioplasty and stenting continue to be used in stable coronary artery disease (meaning, NOT in the middle of the kind of heart attack I had), even though studies show that these expensive, invasive procedures add no significant survival benefit in those living with stable angina. Angioplasty and stenting carry serious risks (including heart attack and stroke) to the patient. The goal of this famous awareness poster from the Parsemus Foundation is to help prevent patients from facing unnecessary risks and debilitating medical expenses without a clear, expected and proven health benefit.

There is the over-confident mindset: people convince themselves they are right because they usually are. Specialists in particular are known to demonstrate unwarranted clinical certainty. They have trained for so long that they begin too easily to rely on their vast knowledge and can overlook the variability in human biology.”
