Women have been outliving men for centuries and perhaps longer. Even with the considerable death risk conferred by childbirth throughout history, women have out-survived men since at least the 16th century when the first reliable mortality data were kept. But more recent research reported at the European Society of Cardiology meeting last year suggests that, although women live longer than men do, our longer lives are not necessarily healthy. Find out why.

If Heart Sisters were an exhibit at the Louvre Museum in Paris, it would take over six days for this year's visitors to see it. It's that time again, dear readers, when media navel-gazers everywhere compile their 'Best Of' or 'Top 10' lists for 2011. So let's take a nostalgic look backwards today at what I like to describe as "cardiac rehab for my brain" - and why almost 270,000 readers from 133 countries have visited Heart Sisters so far!

Since my heart attack, I have decided to stop meekly tolerating bad manners from my health care providers. As Dr. Michael Kahn wrote in the New England Journal of Medicine: "There have been many attempts to foster empathy, curiosity, and compassion in medical students, but none that I know of to systematically teach good manners. I believe that medical education should place more emphasis on this aspect of the doctor–patient relationship — what I would call 'etiquette-based medicine'.
The British medical journal, The Lancet, compares the health challenges of 2011 with those described by the same journal 100 years ago by revisiting its 100-year old editorial called "The Promise of 1911". Many of the key health concerns a century ago still resonate today: ‘the demon of tuberculosis’, the homeopathy debate, and the state of medical education. The editorial comments that medicine has a lot to be proud and humble about over the past century: ‘New years bring new promise and new opportunities, but some old demons remain."

As World War I raged on in the trenches of Europe in 1914, Christmas Eve arrived cold and bleak, but German soldiers put up Christmas trees decorated with candles. Although their enemies, the British soldiers, could see the lights, it took them a few minutes to figure out what they were from. Could this be a trick? British soldiers were ordered not to fire, but to watch closely. But nstead of trickery, the British soldiers heard the German soldiers singing carols and celebrating. Here's the amazing story of true Christmas spirit as it has never been experienced before or since.
