Current diagnostic protocols for identifying heart attack include taking at least two blood samples to test for cardiac enzymes during the first 12 hours after the onset of symptoms. But like many women, I was sent home within five hours of the onset of those textbook symptoms - so was I misdiagnosed after my cardiac tests turned out to be "normal" because I had simply been sent home too soon? Here's more about those telltale cardiac enzymes that doctors look for.

Sadly, only one in five patients actually gets to the hospital within one hour of the onset of heart attack symptoms. In fact, the average delay, even while suffering serious cardiac symptoms, is four hours. This delay means that even people who survive a heart attack can be left with large portions of the heart unnecessarily and permanently scarred by the heart attack. And one of the reasons for what doctors call "treatment-seeking delay" is plain old embarrassment.

When men are under stress, they produce high levels of testosterone which add to the classic "flight-or-fight" stress response. But when women are under stress, we produce high levels of the "love hormone" called oxytocin. This helps to buffer the fight-or-flight response and actually compels us to instead seek out the company of other women to talk about our troubles - what's known as the "tend-and-befriend" response to stress.

Dr. Jerome Groopman, in his must-read book called "How Doctors Think", writes: "Physicians, like everyone else, display certain psychological characteristics when they act in the face of uncertainty. There is the over-confident mindset: people convince themselves they are right because they usually are. Specialists in particular are known to demonstrate unwarranted clinical certainty. They have trained for so long that they begin too easily to rely on their vast knowledge and can overlook the variability in human biology.”
