Apply now for the WomenHeart Symposium at Mayo Clinic

21 May

by Carolyn Thomas  @HeartSisters

Are you, or do you know, a woman living with heart disease who is interested in making a real difference to women’s heart health as a WomenHeart community educator?

Are you also at least six months past your last hospitalization for cardiac treatment, have your doctor’s written permission to travel, are very comfortable speaking in public, and want to start a WomenHeart Support Network in your home community?

If so, consider applying to attend a life-altering training event called the WomenHeart Science & Leadership Symposium at the world-famous Mayo Clinic, October 7-10 in Rochester, Minnesota.

The Symposium is the flagship training event for WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease in partnership with Mayo Clinic. This year, Symposium participants will gather at Mayo for expert training in establishing and leading patient support groups for women with heart disease in their local communities.

This year’s goal for the Symposium is to have two women from a community attend the training, and return home to co-coordinate a new WomenHeart Support Network. The Symposium curriculum addresses the latest science of women’s heart disease and training about the necessary steps and tools for establishing and maintaining a WomenHeart Support Network.

Find out more about my own experience attending the 2008 WomenHeart Science & Leadership Symposium at Mayo.

Annual application process begins in mid-summer.

Watch Dr. Sharonne Hayes, Lisa Tate and Carol Allred share their thoughts about this unique cardiology training event for women.

Are you a “Mayo grad”, too? What advice would you offer to other women applying to attend this year?

A friend just sent me a link to this post. THANKS for this, I’m going to apply to attend this mayo clinic symposium TODAY and keep my fingers crossed that I might actually get accepted. Sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Love your website keep up the good work.

I so wanted to apply and do advocacy and education, but they have changed the focus this year and now one has to be willing to organize and run a support group. More than I can commit to. I love what you have done with your Mayo training….it is so very valuable. Thank you.

Hi Judy – this is indeed a new focus this year for the Symposium. The expectation that Mayo graduates would all be leading support groups was not in place when I went to Mayo in 2008, but a number of other ’08 grads have been very involved in running these support groups since then. My own WomenHeart presentations, however, are now more geared to prevention by addressing cardiac risk factors, and this website is split between educating both the general public as well as those living with heart disease.
      Cheers,
      C.
